Epiphany – by Pastor Kimby
After the 12 days of Christmas, we celebrate Epiphany on January 6. The day marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of the season of Epiphany. Popularly we recognize Epiphany as the celebration of the coming of the magi to visit the baby Jesus. Beyond that one story, Epiphany celebrates the revelation of God to the world in Jesus Christ, light of the world. Epiphany reminds us that in Jesus Christ, God is revealed more clearly and truly than in any other way before or since. In Jesus Christ – we can see God. So themes of Epiphany often include vision, sight, light, inspiration and wisdom – seeing God in the world around us, seeing God in new ways. We open our eyes to God’s inspiration and to seeing the world as God sees.
The stories of Epiphany are all about how God is revealed in the Jesus Christ. The first story about the wise magi reminds us that Jesus came to save the entire world, and calls us to look for the stars and signs of God’s presence. Further, to share the light we have received with others. All are welcome in Christ’s presence through God’s love. The second Biblical story is the baptism of Jesus Christ which reveals redemption and renewal by the grace of God. The third Biblical story of the season of Epiphany is the first miracle of Jesus at the wedding of Cana. This story opens the door to God’s miracles all around us and invites us to look for everyday miracles in our lives today.
This week as you finish the 12 days of Christmas and turn the calendar to the season of Epiphany, celebrate the light of the world Jesus Christ. Search for the star and follow the light. Be open to miracles of mystery and revelation that you may experience the presence of God with you today and in the year ahead.
