Bread for the World – Bring a loaf – by Pastor Kimby
Jesus said “I am the bread of life; whoever believes in me will never be hungry.”
Bread unites people all over the world. We all are hungry. We all are satisfied by some common table bread. We all are able to share bread in order to sustain others. Yet alongside this unity, tremendous diversity is expressed in all the table breads of the world – flatbreads and loaf, spicy and sweet, all the grains of all the cultures, every flavor imaginable. Bread brings to mind taste and smell in our imaginations – varied in preparation and presentation, satisfying and savory, rich in sustenance.
On World Communion Sunday each first Sunday of October, we celebrate this great diversity and unity that is the bread of the world. We celebrate the one bread that unites us – the Living Bread – Jesus Christ. We know that on the same weekend all over the world, Christians of all cultures are sharing the same common bread of life – the one loaf broken for many – in remembrance and in hope. We celebrate together though apart; and we imagine that great day when all are brought together in the kingdom of God to celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ.
This year on October 3 in Worship, we will recognize the variety of breads in the world. You are invited to bring a small loaf of bread to church to share (wrapped or bagged). If your bread represents some part of the world, label it with the place along with your name. After the service we will share the breads of the world and the bread of life in homes and with those who were not able to attend worship. We will be reminded of our interconnection with one another, of our oneness with Christ, and of our call to share God’s love throughout the world as we are all loved by God our Creator.
